CNN —Naomi Osaka’s return to grand slam tennis ended in a first-round defeat against Caroline Garcia at the Australian Open. Osaka, a two-time champion in Melbourne, was competing in her first grand slam tournament in more than a year when she fell to Garcia 6-4 7-6(7-2) on Monday. But the 30-year-old Garcia produced an assured performance against the four-time grand slam champion, hitting 13 aces – including two in the second-set tie-break – and 34 winners. This was Osaka's first grand slam appearance since the US Open in 2022. The match between the countrywomen lasted three hours, 33 minutes, making it the longest WTA final in 2023. Transylvania OpenTamara Korpatsch of Germany won her first career WTA title, defeating home-country favorite 6-3, 6-4 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. It was the first tour final for the 28-year-old Korpatsch, who needed one hour, 52 minutes to get the win.

In a video posted on Instagram, the 20-year-old Briton could be seen training with compatriot Kyle Edmund. Since her fairy-tale run to the U.S. Open title as an 18-year-old qualifier in 2021, Raducanu has faced challenges with her form and fitness. She missed the French Open and Wimbledon tournaments this year while she recovered from surgery and is unlikely to be fit for this year's U.S. Open which begins on Aug. 28. Raducanu was beaten in straight sets by American Coco Gauff in the second round of the Australian Open in January and has not played a tournament since April.
